Nomex embroidery

Nomex embroidery

Postby alfapwr on Tue Sep 08, 2009 1:34 pm

I want to get some embroidery ( name and blood type seem to be the usual ) done on my suit. I believe I've read that it should be done with Nomex thread. Is using Nomex that important or are people using regular thread ? Where can I get it done with Nomex ? I live in Santa Clarita.

Thanks,

Dan

Seeings as how nobody else is answering this, I will step in. What you are proposing would not be a problem with normal polyester thread (Dacron) as it is too small to present a safety hazard. Big graphics and logos should be in Nomex. If you are repairing a suit ie. repairing a seam or closing a tear in needs to be Nomex thread. Polyester or cotton would burn and release the seam.
Hope this helps.

How bout foregoing that and using a small vinyl sticker on the back of your helmet?

We used to have medical cards filled out for use by fire and rescue........havent seen them in a few years..wonder where that deal went....? Remind me to ask Craig Sanford.....or better yet registration as Advanced F&R isn't at all our races.

Okay, but what about sewing on a few patches ? Is dacron okay if it just attaches the patch to the outer layer of the suit ?

Sure the thread sewing on the patch is not likely to be a problem, but is the patch flammable? The thing you need to be thinking about is, be it thread or a patch, if I am sitting in my car and this thing catches on fire is it big enough to make a fire that will do me harm. Most small patches or embroidering your name and blood type are unlikely to do any harm. I guess you just have to decide how much fire fuel you are willing to fasten to your chest.
