BP Questions

Hi

I am new to the board and not an official member of VARA. I would first like to find out some info before committing.

I have a 1968 AMX race car that is classified in the 1968 GCR as fitting into the BP class with a 290 or 343 engine. The car currently has a .050 over 343 in it. The rest of the car is mostly composed of factory components and no fancy stuff like Wilwood brakes or a 9" rear. All AMC in it.

Can anyone please advise on the current class of BP cars running in VARA and possibly provide any helpful information in prepping the car.

At this point I am either going to just run open track events with NASA in their HPDE category or try to go vintage racing. I have heard We love VARA West is very liberal and I would like to try and stay true the original rules.

Thank You
Adam

Adam-
Sounds like you have a solid Car to start out with- On the VARA site you can check the Safety requirements in the rule book section, it is Safety first and fun 2nd with VARA- Brad Long would be the class rep to get in contact with and his info is HERE
Also we will be posting the VARA University info soon which is a great environment to start your licensing process and I can go over that with you as well if you have any questions. The Big Bore Bash is coming up in November and would love to have you come out and see how we play!
Most info can be found on the VARA Website and you can always call any of the representatives if you have detailed questions-

Good Luck and hope to see you at the track!!

Hi Adam,

There is another group of cars that is called group one. This is a class of race car preperation that allows for limited preperation and is close to street prepared cars. Back in the day many of the production car classes mandated linited modification from Stock. Even shelby Gt 350's had to have a place to put the spare tire behind the seats! If your car is stock and street legal it can probably be a group one car . The advantage being that you do not have to compete against the highly prepared (FAST) cars.
It is also less expensive and if you would like to keep your car As-is to maintain the value, group one is a good way to go. You also have the advantage of returning your car to stock or not spending money on things that are part of your learning curve in racing. Let somone know how prepared your car is and we can place you in the correct place.

I am definitly planning on attending the big bore bash to check things out. The car is also not a group one car. It was stripped to the bone when I found it. That is why its a race car now.

I am hoping to have it ready for the first events after the 1st of the year. It still needs painted and some attention to detail items. It also has a bolt on fiberglass hood which I need to find a steel one. And it has a modern Edelbrock Air Gap intake which I am sure needs replaced along with the 4150 Holley on it.

My only direct question at this point after reading over all the rules.......are aluminum flywheels not allowed in BP? I just want to get 100% clarification on this one.

Thanks and I hope to you see you out there at the bash in November.
